Random Ranting…

My expert opinion for your reading pleasure

Posted on: February 15, 2010

I’ve read a lot of books in the past few months so figured I should pass on my expertise on what I think is good out there so you can go out and read them too.

Normally when looking for a book to read I note whether or not it’s part of a series and how many further books there are for me to read once I’ve finished the first one. This links in with my previous post of how much I hate things of finite quantity. However, a few months ago I broke with tradition and bought a book called Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater which has intended sequels…but not yet. Usually I wouldn’t bother starting it until closer to the date when the second book comes out (or possibly even the third) so that I can blast through them all in a few days and completely immerse myself in the world the author creates. I did try, I left the book on my shelf for about a month, ensuring it would definitely get read… but at a time when I could then keep going and read further.

I failed at waiting. I started reading it about 2 or 3 weeks ago and had already finished it within 24 hours. I have to admit, it’s a very addictive book! I’m sure you have all guessed by now that I love books that are supernatural/fantasy in nature but are written in a way that makes you believe it could actually be happening in the real world and you just don’t know about it (much like the Twilight saga or the Night World series) and this book did not fail to meet my ultimately picky preferences.

Here’s the description of Shiver from Maggie Stiefvater’s website “For years, Grace has watched the wolves in the woods behind her house. One yellow-eyed wolf—her wolf—is a chilling presence she can’t seem to live without. Meanwhile, Sam has lived two lives: In winter, the frozen woods, the protection of the pack, and the silent company of a fearless girl. In summer, a few precious months of being human… until the cold makes him shift back again.

Now, Grace meets a yellow-eyed boy whose familiarity takes her breath away. It’s her wolf. It has to be. But as winter nears, Sam must fight to stay human—or risk losing himself, and Grace, forever.”

Now I know you will have just read that and are now thinking “Hmm, that does sound good, I think I’ll go buy it when I’m next in town. However, like Hayley, I prefer when there is more than one book for me to read.” Well fear not my faithful readers! The second book is on it’s way! The brief description may have a few tiny spoilers about the first book so quickly run off and read it then come straight back here and read the rest of this post!

Linger Cover LargeIn Maggie Stiefvater’s Shiver, Grace and Sam found each other.  Now, in Linger, they must fight to be together. For Grace, this means defying her parents and keeping a very dangerous secret about her own well-being. For Sam, this means grappling with his werewolf past . . . and figuring out a way to survive into the future. Add into the mix a new wolf named Cole, whose own past has the potential to destroy the whole pack.  And Isabelle, who already lost her brother to the wolves . . . and is nonetheless drawn to Cole.

At turns harrowing and euphoric, Linger is a spellbinding love story that explores both sides of love — the light and the dark, the warm and the cold — in a way you will never forget.

Comes out in stores everywhere July 20th. Pre-order here.
